The musings of one of God’s smallest creatures on events in and around the Parish over the past seven days . . . .
It has been very, very quiet around The Presbytery this week as Fr D went off on holiday . . .
On Monday Fr D took down boxes from the attic and put his clothes in them before leaving the boxes in the hallway downstairs. Then he spent time completing what he could of the next few Newsletters and Prayers of Intercession.
On Tuesday, having celebrated Morning Prayer, Mass, and Exposition, Fr D had a clear out of the fridge so that there was nothing to go bad whilst he was away. After this he spent some time with Sarah in the Parish Office making sure that everything was in place for the weekends whilst he was going to be away. In the afternoon Fr D spent some time reading and relaxing as he tried to calm down ready to go off on Wednesday. In the evening he was at a restaurant in Weybridge helping to celebrate a ’BIG’ birthday of one of his previous Parish Priests, Canon Bill Davern (Epsom). Given that the plane for Rhodes was leaving at 05.30 from Gatwick and that he had to be at the airport two hours before this he was reconciled to the fact that he was not going to get to bed on Tuesday night!
Very, very early on Wednesday morning Fr D was in the kitchen making sure that he had a reasonable breakfast and plenty of tea (given that nowhere abroad can make tea properly except in Ireland) before heading off to the airport. His friend from Dartford came around the motorway to pick him and his boxes up and they headed off to the airport. On arrival at the airport they parked the car in the long-stay car park and caught the transfer bus into the terminal. Both had already checked-in and had their boarding cards on their mobile phones which meant that they could go straight through after they had dropped their baggage. Once through security they found somewhere to read the newspapers and have more tea before they were called through to get on board the plane. They had already booked seats (Fr D by the window, not because he likes the view but because he doesn’t like anyone climbing over him once he has sat down!). At this point Fr D relaxed and shut his eyes, falling to sleep even before the plane took off and slept the entire journey (5 hours)! He woke up just as the plane was coming in to land at Rhodes airport and was able to see the island atypical for a Greek island in that it is not a lump of limestone in the middle of the sea but is actually quite lush with plenty of plant growth . . . . .
