The musings of one of God’s smallest creatures on events in and around the Parish over the past seven days . . . .
A really busy week around The Presbytery this time around as several things all seemed to arrive at the same time . . . . . .
Last weekend was, of course, First Eucharist weekend. On Saturday morning Fr D had a ‘runthrough’ of the service with the children and their parents so that everyone knew what was expected - where to be, and when. The children also got to practice receiving Holy Communion with un-consecrated hosts. During the rehearsal they were answering Fr D’s questions about things - proving to him that they were indeed ready and prepared for the ‘milestone’ event in their lives of faith. Sunday turned out to be the hottest day of the year so far, and what better day to be celebrating First Eucharist. The children remembered everything from the rehearsal and everything went off well (Fr D was very happy indeed!). After the Mass the children stood at the front door of the church to be congratulated by parishioners as they left Mass, then they went with Fr D to the hedge outside of the Presbytery to line up for the photographers before going home to their individual family celebrations.
Fr D had lots to do during the week to ensure that everything was ready for the Diaconate Ordination with Bishop Richard on Thursday night. He was determined that there would not be any clergy sitting in the front benches during the service, as he thinks it looks awful and like a fence between the sanctuary and the people. He had a scheme to avoid this but needed to know the number of priests and deacons coming to the event - this was complicated by late replies, people changing their minds etc. etc. In the event he didn’t get exact numbers until midday on Thursday!
Bishop Richard was greatly impressed with the service, and especially with the music for the event. A good mix of our own regular musicians and singers along with friends of Deacon Paul. Fr D was delighted that the Entrance Antiphon, the Responsorial Psalm, and the Communion Antiphon were all sung (and well) as envisaged by the Roman Missal! The participation by the congregation was also remarked on by many of the visiting clergy (take a bow).
After the church part of the celebration there was a reception in the Parish Centre to which all were invited. Whilst ‘mingling’ Fr D was approached by several local non-Catholics who were among the guests to be told just how delighted they were with the beauty of the church itself and the ceremony . . . . . . .
