The musings of one of God’s smallest creatures on events in and around the Parish over the past seven days . . . .
Things have been really busy around The Presbytery this week as Fr D continues the parents and family meetings for First Reconciliation; starts the publicity for the new Confirmation Programme; prepares what he can of the newsletters that will be published whilst he is away on holiday; and cooks a batch of his vegetarian chilli for the Harvest Supper . . . .
On Tuesday after Morning Prayer, Mass, and Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament Fr D shot off in the car to get the necessary supplies for the Harvest Supper Social taking place on Friday evening later in the week. He was greatly perplexed when he couldn’t find a large catering tin of tuna flakes (as he has done many times before); on asking the assistant in the Cash & Carry he discovered that they do not do flaked tuna in tins any more but in sealed foil pouches - which were right where Fr D had been looking! He also obtained the potatoes for cooking, a large bag of grated mature cheese, and an ‘industrial tin’ of baked beans!
On Wednesday Fr D had a meeting in London to attend which meant that he was unable to celebrate Mass at 09.30. It was the first time that he had used trains since before ‘lock-down,’ fortunately they were actually running and keeping to time!
Thursday, after Morning Prayer and Mass, Fr D went down to the Philip Howard Centre in Crawley where all the diocesan offices are now located. Still many ‘snagging’ items being sorted out around the plant and, today, Bishop Richard telling the handy man where he wanted crucifixes and medieval pictures mounted around the building! When he had finished in Crawley Fr D had to go down to Worthing where he attended a meeting of the Trustees of the BOSCO Catholic Education Trust - three more schools are joining the trust before Christmas, if everything goes well. When he finally arrived home in the middle of the evening he was occupied with the ‘second’ cooking of the vegetarian chilli.
Friday, Fr D did not have Morning Prayer or Mass to celebrate as the Mass was in the evening before the Harvest Supper Social. In the morning he put the final touches to the Thanksgiving Mass and the Prayers of Intercession for the weekend before starting work on preparing the Hall in the Parish Centre for the Harvest Supper. He was a little nervous because Cobham have not experienced one of Fr D’s Harvest Suppers before - but he has been doing them for about twenty years now, since he became a Parish Priest. . .
