Our diocesan World Youth Day (WYD) group arrived in Lisbon on Monday for the 37th World Youth Day with Pope Francis.
To date they have visited the City of Joy, enjoyed some of the youth festival events, and attended the opening Mass presided over by the Cardinal Patriarch of Lisbon, Manuel Clemente.
Vatican News reports that Pope Francis arrived in Portugal on Wednesday. Speaking to a global audience about the many thousands of young people arriving in Lisbon, the Pope said: “Young people from around the world, who long for unity, peace and fraternity, urge us to make their good dreams come true. They are taking to the streets, not to cry out in anger but to share the hope of the Gospel." The Pope highlighted that World Youth Day represents an opportunity to "build together as it revives our desire to accomplish something new and different [and] to set sail together towards the future.”
Our Youth Officer Lizzie Wakeling is leading our diocesan WYD group and says: "We are very much looking forward to welcoming the Holy Father to Lisbon on Thursday, praying the stations of the cross with him on Friday, and attending an overnight vigil (Saturday) and Missioning Mass on Sunday. Please continue to pray for all 40 of our young people as they are encouraged to 'Rise up and go in haste,' to respond to God's call in their lives."
WYD is a pilgrimage, a celebration of youth, an expression of the universal Church, and a moment of evangelisation for the youth of the world - you can find out more on the Catholic Bishops Conference of England & Wales’ website.
