The musings of one of God’s smallest creatures on events in and around the Parish over the past seven days . . . . We welcome, once more, Fr John McKay, this weekend whilst Fr D finishes up at the Canon Law Society of Great Britain and Ireland Annual Conference in Rome. Since Monday Fr D has joined about 150 other English speaking Canon Lawyers from all around the world (England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, U.S.A., Australia, New Zealand, Malta, Norway, Canada, and India) at their annual meeting of the profession. All of those in attendance have been sent by their respective bishops at some point to study the sacred science of Canon Law at a Pontifical University (Rome, U.S.A., Canada, Belgium, Spain) before being awarded a Pontifical Degree allowing them to practice Canon Law for the benefit of the people of their diocese. The Annual Conference moves around on a rolling four-year cycle (England, Scotland, Ireland, and then Rome). Whilst in Rome they stay at a conference centre/hotel run by the Vatican authorities (It used to be a seminary for training priests. The centre is situated just behind St Peter’s and it makes all the sights in Rome very accessible - when the participants are not involved in listen to lectures/talks. This year’s sessions included: ‘The Importance of Canon Lawyers on the Synodal Pathway’ Cardinal Mario Grech - Secretary General of the Synod of Bishops in Rome ‘The Return of Penal Discipline in the Pastoral Field of Governance’ Archbishop Juan Ignacio Ochoa - Secretary of the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts ‘Migrants and Ecclesial Law’ Fr Fabio Baggio - Under-Secretary Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development ‘The Nexus Between Marital Consent and Trauma Disorders’ Dr Christine Reilly ‘Is It Possible to Have Particular Law Common to all sui iuris Churches of a Territory?’ Fr Sunny Kokkaravalayil - Pontifical Oriental Institute Of course one of the biggest benefits of the Conference each year is the chance to meet up with other Canon Lawyers to discuss questions of common interest and to discover how Canon Law is applied in different cultures and what particular trends and problems are occurring elsewhere in the Church .
