The musings of one of God’s smallest creatures on events in and around the Parish over the past seven days . . . .
On Sunday Fr D was delighted to be able to celebrate the Baptism Rite of Welcome with four families from the Parish, two at the 09.00 Mass and two at the 11.00 Mass. These families are presently on the Infant Baptism Preparation Course and will, over the next few weeks/months, complete the course with the celebration of Baptism. The course of preparation for infants (there are different arrangements for children of school age) from the Parish to be baptised consists of two evening catechetical sessions and the Rite of Welcome (at the weekend Mass the family normally attend); only after these have been completed can the Baptism celebration take place. Five of these courses are offered over the course of the year (autumn, winter, spring1, spring2 and summer) all of which culminate in a ‘Baptism Sunday’ when (unless by arrangement the Baptism takes place during Mass) the Baptism takes place at 12.30 on the Sunday (no baptisms take place during Advent or Lent).
On Tuesday, after Morning Prayer, Mass, and Exposition, Fr D began work on the questions for the forthcoming Parish ‘Pancake & Quiz Night’ (Tuesday 21st February 19.00). This year’s quiz will be General Knowledge based (not Catholic Church based) and includes questions covering: food, drink, sport, geography, and more general topics. He has worked out the questions, got the tickets ready (available after Masses this weekend and from the Parish Office during the week), designed an advertising poster (narthex), and printed answer sheets. All that’s left to do is do the shopping for pancake supplies and to get the questions onto a power-point presentation for the night. On Tuesday evening Fr D met with the parents of this year’s First Eucharist children for their second session (‘Listening to the Readings and Homily’). As parents promised (wrote the cheque) at their child’s baptism, they are supposed to be the “first and best teachers of the faith” to them. Picking up on this (cashing the cheque) Fr D prepares them at their session to be able to teach and support their child at the children’s session, later in the week. This is sometimes called ‘parent-led’ catechesis and is now the preferred method in the diocese for children preparing for Reconciliation and First Eucharist. As a Parish we have been using this method for three years now and Fr D is very pleased with how it has led to the children having ‘quality time’ with their parents whilst learning from them matters of faith.
On Thursday evening Fr D met up with three of the families who celebrated the Rite of Welcome last Sunday for their final session before the Baptisms take place, two families next Sunday (19th) and one in July . . . . . .
