In the month of November we are all reminded that the Church is not limited to this world alone but extends into the next as well. In our praying for the dead, as we prayed for them whilst they were still with us, we are united with the ‘Communion of Saints.’
Our ultimate goal, of course, is to be together once more with those whom we have loved and to be in the presence of God. The prayer for the dead in our Eucharistic Prayer IV expresses this beautifully:
Remember those who have died in the peace of Christ and all the dead whose faith is known to you alone . . . .
and, also in Eucharistic Prayer III:
Welcome into your kingdom our departed brothers and sisters and all who have left this world in your friendship. There we hope to share in your glory when every tear will be wiped away. On that day, we shall see you, our God, as you are. We shall become like you and praise you forever . . . .
What a wonderful thought to carry with us this November: that those who have already died are ‘God-like’ and through death, we too will come to share in God’s life.
Catholics call November the ‘Month of the Dead’ and we are traditionally invited to arrange for the celebration of Masses for the ‘Holy Souls.’ Next weekend there will be ‘November Dead Lists available in the narthex which should be completed with the names of those who have died over the past year, they should then be placed into an envelope marked ‘Holy Souls’ along with £10 (set by the Bishop) before handing it in to the Parish Office or putting it through the Presbytery letterbox. A Mass for the Holy Souls will then be scheduled and the names entered in our ‘Parish Book of the Dead’ which will be brought up to the sanctuary at our weekend Masses throughout November.
