The Church has marked the World Day of Migrants and Refugees since 1914. This important day offers an opportunity to express concern for different vulnerable people; to pray for them as they face many challenges and to increase awareness about the many opportunities that migration offers.
The theme chosen by the Pope Francis for this year's 106th World Day of Migrants and Refugees is 'Forced like Jesus Christ to flee' focussing on the pastoral care of internally displaced people (IDPs). The Pope highlighted the tragedy of internally displaced people earlier this year saying it was 'one of the challenges of our contemporary world'. Speaking in an earlier General Audience the Pope said:
'Hope is the force that drives the hearts of those who depart, leaving home, their homeland, at times their relatives and families... in search of a better life which is worthier of them and their loved ones. And it is also the impulse in the heart of those who welcome: the desire to encounter, to get to know each other, to dialogue.... Hope is the force that drives us to share the journey, because the journey is made jointly: by those who come to our land, and by us who go towards their heart, to understand them, to understand their culture, their language... Brothers and sisters, let us not be afraid of sharing the journey! Have no fear! Let us not be afraid of sharing hope!'
