In the healing of the man born blind, Jesus symbolises his claim to be the “Light of the World.” He demonstrates that even blindness and darkness cannot overcome the light and life that Jesus wants to share with everyone. The question for the people who witnessed this miracle-and for all of us who have heard it-is whether we are
willing to admit that we all still have places in our lives where we are blind or we don’t see clearly.
The Pharisees are so sure that they are right in this story-and that Jesus and the man who is healed are somehow wrong-that they completely ignore the miracle! They want to be right (which for them means others have to be wrong) more than they care about the quality of another person’s life. In their beliefs, following the law to avoid
working on the Sabbath takes priority over someone being given a new lease on life. As a result, they take issue with Jesus because healing the man required “work,” which means Jesus broke the Sabbath law.
The Pharisees are ultimately the ones that Jesus labels as blind because they have their priorities all wrong. They would rather argue about the details of this man’s life and healing than celebrate with him that he has been cured. So while the man born blind goes from physical blindness to being able to see Jesus as a prophet and
eventually as his Lord, the Pharisees move further away from the light.
