The musings of one of God’s smallest creatures on events in and around the Parish over the past seven days . . . .
The ‘Great Week’ (Holy Week) is always among the busiest weeks of any priest’s year; and this past week certainly proved the case . . . . . .
Over last weekend the Parish celebrated the beginning of Holy Week with Passion (Palm) Sunday. At the 18.00 Mass on Saturday and the 09.00 Mass on Sunday we began Mass with the Simple Entry (at the rear of the church). At the 11.00 Mass on Sunday we began with the ‘Palm Procession’ from the main hall of the Parish Centre. Later, in the afternoon, we celebrated the last of this Lent’s Evening Prayer and Benediction services (the next will take place on Corpus Christi Sunday, along with a period of extended Exposition).
On Monday Fr D spent time checking that he had enough readers, disciples etc. for our Holy Week Services and finalised the Triduum booklet that we will be using this year. In the evening Fr D started thinking about his trip to Lourdes with sick children next Monday (and writing out his ‘packing list’). With the exception of the two Easters where COVID cancelled the trips Fr D has been travelling with the same group as chaplain since 1989 - 32 years!
On Tuesday morning, after celebrating Morning Prayer, Mass, and Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, Fr D started looking through his Holy Week manual to check that he had everything that he needs for the Triduum and started thinking about the files that he needs to get together for the various readers and himself. In the evening he was around to let the musicians into the church for one of their practices for Holy Thursday and Good Friday.
After celebrating Morning Prayer and Mass on Wednesday morning Fr D spent some time talking over the BIG triduum services with our sacristan and making some remote preparations for the Holy Thursday Mass (removing the Blessed Sacrament from the tabernacle, getting the towels and apron out for the ‘washing of feet,’ preparing the Altar of Repose etc.). He also needed to start work on next weekend’s Newsletter as he will be in Lourdes until Sunday.
On Thursday morning Fr D could be found walking the three major services (Triduum) of Easter in the church, making notes of things he needed to do and checking that all was at hand for the services to run smoothly. Later in the morning he went off to St Josephs, Epsom to get the Holy Oils for use over the coming year (these had been blessed and consecrated at the Chrism Mass in Arundel on Wednesday evening). In the afternoon Fr D was able to spend some quiet time getting ready for the evening service . . . . . .
