Church Mouse update 5th September 2021
The musings of one of God’s smallest creatures on events in and around the Parish over the past seven days . . . .
A very full week around The Presbytery as things gear up for the new academic year (schools, catechetical programmes) and preparations for the Diamond Jubilee celebrations reach fever pitch . . . .
On Tuesday, after celebrating Morning Prayer, Mass and Exposition Fr D was working with a family on a funeral to be held on Friday and continuing getting parts of the newsletter whilst he’s on holiday sorted. In the evening, at 18.00, the cut-off for this year’s First Reconciliation & Eucharist Preparation Programmes passed and Fr D began sorting things out for the eight candidates that have sent in Application Forms. The parents will meet with Fr D next Tuesday evening for the launch of the Programmes. In the evening Fr D cleared the sanctuary furniture in the church for a kind parishioner who volunteered to deep clean the carpet, ready for the Jubilee celebrations next weekend.
After Morning Prayer and Mass on Wednesday Fr D went off down to Brighton for his usual ‘Tribunal’ work; whilst there this week he managed to finish clearing out old files and documents from the 1970’s and 1980’s. On arriving home he just had time to get supper ready and eat it before joining with our musicians and singers in the first practice for the Jubilee Mass next Sunday - all went very well and there was a great atmosphere of co-operation from everyone.
On Thursday mid-morning Fr D celebrated Mass for the staff at Notre Dame School as they were in before the children to prepare for the next academic year - it was also a great opportunity to introduce new members of staff to the ‘Catholic ethos’ that pervades the school. In the late afternoon Fr D met with another member of the Parish Finance Committee to decide which quotation the Parish should go with for undertaking the next ‘quinquennial survey’ of all the Parish buildings. This is required by the diocese so that we can decide how best to undertake the maintenance of the Parish plant over the next five years. Also on Thursday afternoon Fr D took delivery of the Christmas Bazaar Grand Draw Tickets which will be distributed to parishioners in a couple of weeks - this will be a little bit of an ‘act of faith’ in case any Covid restrictions come back to haunt us all during the autumn.
Friday morning there was no celebration of Morning Prayer as the Mass was a Requiem followed by a burial at Cobham cemetery. In the evening Fr D attended the Institution of Paul Fisher as a Lector by Bishop Richard . . . . . .
