The musings of one of God’s smallest creatures on events in and around the Parish over the past seven days . . . .
Another busy week as preparations came to a head for all of our Christmas services . . . . .
On Sunday afternoon there were two Advent devotional services as we entered what is known as ‘Greater Advent’ (17-24 December). At 15.30 parishioners gathered to celebrate Advent Evening Prayer and Benediction - grabbing a chance of some quite time with the Lord, out of the secular Christmas hustle and bustle. Then at 17.30 more parishioners (and non-parishioners) gathered together for our annual Parish Carol Service where some of our favourite readings and carols were heard. After the Carol service many enjoyed mulled wine and Mince pies in the Parish Centre.
On Tuesday after Morning Prayer, Mass, and Exposition, Fr D was playing host to this months Deanery Clergy Meeting (this had been put back a week because the Bishop called a meeting of all the Surrey clergy last Tuesday to outline his Diocesan Pastoral Plan. There were eighteen priest and deacons around the meeting table in the St Francis room upstairs in the Parish Centre, all talking about ‘the plan.’ After the meeting sixteen remained for a very nice Christmas lunch. (Fr D was happy once they had all left and taken their new Diocesan Directory packs with them! But, just as he’s got back into the house and had sat down with a cup of tea the doorbell went and there were fifteen boxes of materials for ‘the plan’ delivered - talk about bad timing!)
On Wednesday morning after Morning Prayer and Mass, Fr D was straight down to the Diocesan Offices in Crawley for his last ‘stint’ at the Tribunal until the New Year. He managed to answer a whole load of questions from the new Tribunal Administrator who is now flying by herself after a two month ‘shadowing’ of the previous Administrator. After he had assured himself that all the questions were answered adequately he spoke with the diocesan IT man who is coming up to Cobham in January to do some work on our telephone system so that we only need to have one phone line into the plant (rather than the present two) - this should lead to some substantial savings over the course of a year.
After Morning Prayer and Mass on Thursday, Fr D was delighted to receive an email from the diocese to say that they had been informed by the electricity supplier that Fr D didn’t want to go with has ‘run up the white flag’ about the rate of VAT that they have been charging us changing from 20% to 5% . . . .
