The musings of one of God’s smallest creatures on events in and around the Parish over the past seven days . . . .
A little slower pace around The Presbytery this week after the excitement of the Jubilee . . . .
Our Diamond Jubilee celebrations last weekend were a great success both spiritually and socially. Bishop Richard joined us to celebrate the 11.00 Mass where we were treated to a wonderful liturgy to mark this special landmark. The church was resplendent, with the masses of flowers setting off well the new decorations to very good effect. The normal readings of the day were very suitable to remind us of exactly what we are supposed to be as the local Church founded by Christ - reminding us of our great mission. For the first time in ages it was possible to have congregational singing in the church and this was much appreciated by many parishioners who gave ‘full-vent’ to their vocal chords! Our musicians and singers were able to lead us in some very thought provoking music, again on the theme of the event. We were fortunate to enjoy the presence of several priests with a special connection to the Parish - Fr John McKay, Mgr Michael Jackson and Fr John Horn (Fr Jonathan How had a Mass in his own parish but joined us at the reception afterwards). The liturgy was also an opportunity to really put our new sound system through its paces. Bishop Richard was very impressed with the liturgy and the “great participation of the congregation!”
Of course the event would not have been ‘Catholic’ if there had not been some sort of social event attached to it. After the Mass we retired to the Sacred Heart Parish Centre for a ‘Covidsafe’ reception. Wine and soft drinks were available along with a special ‘Jubilee Buffet Box’ of food and a celebration cake too! Thanks to many parishioners and Sarah a projected slide show was running all the way through highlighting various points in the history of the Parish. There was a lot of ‘spot who that parishioner is’ going on - especially among the older members of our community.
Rather than add to the length of the Mass Fr D saved his talk until the Reception where he spoke about the attributes of a vibrant healthy Catholic Parish - humble, healing, and merciful.
Bishop Richard enjoyed moving around the assembled participants as they were seated under marquees (thank you Notre Dame School) in the car park eating and drinking; he was particularly pleased to see so many children present with their parents. Much as Fr D expected his only real question was did we buy anyone in? Answer, no all home-grown
