The musings of one of God’s smallest creatures on events in and around the Parish over the past seven days . . . .
After his day off on Monday Fr D was waiting in the evening for parishioners to pop in and help erect the Christmas tree (which had been delivered to Fr’s garage earlier in the week) next to the Advent Wreath. Fr D had thought that the tree, when it was outside his garage, looked smaller than usual; but as it went up it was perhaps slightly taller than usual! It was important that the tree went up in the early evening as the regular Monday ‘Hungarian Prayer Group’ had, once again, volunteered to decorate the tree - which they did really well! After celebrating Morning Prayer, Mass, and Exposition on Tuesday morning Fr D had to shoot off down to Effingham for the monthly Deanery Clergy Meeting (which included the first Christmas dinner of the season!). There was a lot of discussion about this year’s Confirmation ceremonies this time around (all the existing arrangements had been messed up by the date of the coronation and the bishop changing the date because of this). The date of the Confirmation celebration that our Parish candidates will be attending was confirmed as 22 nd April. There was also further discussion on this year’s Advent Reconciliation Services (Fr Stephen and Fr D had already arranged a joint celebration between Cobham and Effingham at Cobham Friday 16th December at 19.30) with four priests available.
On Wednesday evening Fr D went across to St Joseph’s, Epsom, to help them with their Advent Reconciliation Service (Fr Stephen O’Brien was one of the priest's coming to help us at our service).
Having celebrated Morning Prayer and Mass on Thursday morning Fr D went off down to the diocesan offices at Crawley for the last time in 2022. He had a few decrees that had to be signed and a couple of questions that had been raised by people in the annulment process. After this there was a Christmas buffet lunch with all the office staff at the St Philip Howard Centre with Bishop Richard handing out ‘secret Santa’s!’ Fr D left as soon as he decently could as he had the last session before Christmas with our Parish confirmation candidates in the Parish Centre in the early evening. After this Fr D acted as ‘delivery agent’ for a diocesan ‘goodie bag’ for Canon Anthony Churchill (the diocese makes sure that all of our retired priests get a little something at Christmas.) Fr D had hoped that he would be able to receive our copies of the Diocesan Directory when he was at the office but they were nowhere to be found . . .
