The musings of one of God’s smallest creatures on events in and around the Parish over the past seven days . . . .
Quite hectic once again around The Presbytery this past week . . . . .
Last Friday at Mass, getting ready for the first weekend of November, Fr D turned the church heating on and everything went well the boiler ‘fired up’ and warm air came up through the vents. Happy that all was sound Fr D turned the system over to the normal programming timetable ready for Saturday evening. Then, come Saturday evening, nothing happened! Fr D tried all of the ‘tickling tricks’ he’d learnt over the years to entice the boiler into action but all to no avail. In the knowledge that the engineers were due to come for the annual service on Tuesday he thought that things would be settled. However, the engineer completing the service said, after trying for some time, that the main programmer on the boiler had now come to the end of its life (groan!). As the whole boiler is now quite old (and no longer made) the engineer is not sure if he can source any replacement parts. He will get in touch with the manufacturers to see what might be possible. Fr D had hoped that the boiler might last for another couple of years whilst we researched how and what to replace it with - especially with the knowledge that the government is planning to ban gas fired boilers by 2035. At present Fr D is hoping that parts (or a solution) can be found to get us through this winter; in the meantime we may well have to make sure that we wrap up well! On Tuesday evening Fr D met with the members of the Parish Finance Committee to look at how our budget for the year is performing - and to give them the ‘good news’ regarding the church boiler! As well as the budget they looked at the ‘scheme of works’ that has been prepared for the works on the church roofs and high-level maintenance works; these will now be given to three contractors (one very local) before making a decision and getting the diocese to agree. This seems to have taken a long time to get to this stage but we’re there now and can begin thinking about referring to the quinquennial survey of our properties to see what areas need attention next!
On Wednesday and Thursday Fr D was down at the Diocesan Offices in Crawley as usual where he managed to get another of his marriage cases ready for calling a judgement session . . . . .
